The labor policy that the Spanish company
CALVO, a producer and distributor of
canned fish, is carrying out in El
Salvador is not only at
odds with the law and all ethical
principles, it also violates the most basic
human rights. After having threatened to
leave the country if El Salvador did not
ratify four of the ILO’s fundamental
conventions –which would enable it to export
tariff-free to the European Union-
and having achieved its goal, CALVO
is now denying its workers the right to form
a union under these conventions.
As if its
record
weren’t bad enough to provoke the
strongest contempt against the company’s
conduct, it has added yet another serious
element to its string of abuses: CALVO
is now forcing its workers to take a
polygraph (lie detector) test, where, among
other questions, they must answer if they
“are a member of the union” and what they
“think of the unionists that are active in
the company.”
We are asking you to contribute to the
campaign we are launching to defend the
rights of the workers of CALVO El
Salvador and to protest against the
appalling behavior of this Spanish
transnational corporation.
