Harassment, coercion, and antiunion practices

With the support of the Federation of Food Industry Workers of the State of São Paulo (FETIASP) and the National Confederation of Food Industry Workers (CNTA), the Marília Workers Union (STIAM) staged a demonstration on March 31 in response to a number of actions by the unit manager.

Artur Bueno Júnior, CNTA vice president, said in conversation with La Rel that the demonstration and mobilization were called to protest certain practices that had been reported by workers, including excessive pressure, coercion, and situations amounting to workplace harassment.

Among the practices reported is the installation of cameras to monitor worker activities, including controls that affect access to the company’s medical services.

“There are also reports of abusive demands made on workers in terms of the tasks they must perform and the targets they have to meet, as well as ill-treatment of the unit’s workers on the part of management,” Júnior highlighted.

Another very serious issue has to do with antiunion practices. The manager reacted to the union’s complaints by encouraging and pressuring workers to leave the union.

“Workers who have been union members for over 20 years have reported that they are being coerced into asking the union to cancel their membership. This clearly constitutes an antiunion action and a violation of the workers’ freedom of association,” the CNTA officer denounced.

It should be noted that these are not recent developments. The union had already filed a formal complaint with the company’s Human Resources department, requesting an investigation and the adoption of the corresponding measures.

“The goal of the demonstration and mobilization at the Marília unit was to denounce these practices, reaffirm the defense of workers’ rights, and show that the sector is taking a united stance against the reported violations, with significant employee participation,” Júnior concluded.
