Arbitrary layoffs in Uruguay

With just days to go before the meeting between the IUF and Nestlé in Vevey, Switzerland, scheduled for October 10, the Swiss multinational corporation is up to its old tricks again in Uruguay, suggesting it cares very little, if at all, about the repercussions its actions might have at corporate headquarters when our international organization meets up with top management.
As I see it, what happened in Uruguay with the dismissal of 13 workers from the Distribution Center ─10 of whom were union members─ and the abrupt way in which the decision was made, ignoring our affiliate, is a move fully supported by the multinational corporation’s head office.
The question now is: What is the point of holding two meetings a year with Nestlé if in Vevey there is much talk of human rights and union freedom while down here in the South its officers act ruthlessly in favor of precarious work and against trade unions?
Adopting such a decision on Tuesday, September 30, and notifying the Latin American Federation of Nestlé Workers (FELATRAN) just one day earlier from Buenos Aires is not an act of respect but a disgusting corporate imposition. Nothing short of that.
We will continue reporting on this situation.
